{"id":797,"date":"2016-12-08T03:22:23","date_gmt":"2016-12-07T22:22:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cgauthier.ca\/en\/?p=797"},"modified":"2016-12-16T04:04:52","modified_gmt":"2016-12-15T23:04:52","slug":"clair-obscur-in-photography","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.cgauthier.ca\/en\/2016\/12\/08\/clair-obscur-in-photography\/","title":{"rendered":"Clair-Obscur in photography"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>D&#8217;abord une\u00a0d\u00e9finition : Le clair-obscur est une pratique artistique permettant de produire des effets de contraste de luminosit\u00e9 par l&#8217;utilisation d&#8217;effets d&#8217;ombre et de lumi\u00e8re sur un sujet. G\u00e9n\u00e9ralement, le clair-obscur permet de r\u00e9aliser des gradations de couleurs claires sur un arri\u00e8re-plan sombre. Inversement, on peut aussi avoir un font clair et un sujet sombre.<\/p>\n<p>Le proc\u00e9d\u00e9 du clair-obscur a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 par les peintres de la Renaissance. On r\u00e9f\u00e8re \u00e0 Leonard Da Vinci (1452 \u2013 1519) comme l\u2019initiateur de la technique, mais c&#8217;est le peintre italien Le Caravage (1571 \u2013 1610 qui en sera le grand champion.<\/p>\n<p>La technique d\u00e9velopp\u00e9e par L\u00e9onard de Vinci nomm\u00e9e sfumato consiste \u00e0 produire un clair-obscur sans transition perceptible, par gradations fondues entre les diff\u00e9rents plans.<\/p>\n<p>Au contraire, l\u2019approche de Le Caravage consiste \u00e0 faire c\u00f4toyer en contact direct les parties claires et fonc\u00e9s, sans d\u00e9grad\u00e9, en amplifiant les contrastes. On nomme cette technique le t\u00e9n\u00e9brisme. On voit appara\u00eetre cette pratique au d\u00e9but du XVII si\u00e8cle.<\/p>\n<h3>La coexistence de la lumi\u00e8re et l\u2019obscurit\u00e9.<\/h3>\n<p>La syst\u00e9matisation du clair-obscur a une signification chez Le Caravage : le monde terrestre est plong\u00e9 dans l\u2019obscurit\u00e9 tandis que l\u2019intrusion divine se signale par la lumi\u00e8re de l&#8217;action. Ce proc\u00e9d\u00e9 permet d\u2019augmenter la tension dramatique, de figer les attitudes \u00e0 un moment pr\u00e9cis, de mettre en volume les personnages et de donner l\u2019illusion du relief.<\/p>\n<p>Le clair-obscur du Caravage engendrera un courant pictural appel\u00e9 caravagisme. Les peintres des \u00e9coles du nord de l&#8217;italie, notamment Rembrandt (1606 \u2013 1669), adopteront cette pratique. Cette pratique restera populaire en peinture jusqu\u2019au XVIII si\u00e8cle.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019utilisation de la technique donne des r\u00e9sultats si puissants et dramatiques qu\u2019elle est devenu une source de controverse, certain y voyant une amplification artificielle des effets lumineux et de la force des ombres.<\/p>\n<h3>L\u2019usage du clair-obscur en photographie<\/h3>\n<p>Un \u0153il entrain\u00e9 peut d\u00e9tecter dans la nature de nombreuse circonstance o\u00f9 un \u00e9clairage clair-obscur est visible. Grace \u00e0 des pellicules et capteurs plus performants, l&#8217;utilisation du clair-obscur est devenue une pratique courante avec de nombreux photographe, en captant des zones lumineuses et sombres. L\u2019inspiration des peintres classiques et flamands est donc une inspiration sans fin pour raffiner la composition de photos contrast\u00e9es.<\/p>\n<p>Avec une maitrise plus efficace de la lumi\u00e8re artificielle, le clair-obscur est devenu une pratique recherch\u00e9e en photographie. Pour le photographe, c\u2019est comme si on dissociait l\u2019\u00e9clairage de l\u2019arri\u00e8re-plan et l\u2019avant-plan en diff\u00e9rentes couches, chacune avec ses caract\u00e9ristique propres au niveau de la luminosit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019utilisation du clair-obscur est en opposition direct avec la technique du HDR (High Dynamic Range) qui consiste \u00e0 att\u00e9nuer l\u2019\u00e9cart entre les zones sombres et claires et cherche a augmenter la visibilit\u00e9 sur l&#8217;ensemble du clich\u00e9.
